Dear Dr. Cates,
Bill just received his official letter. He made Dean’s List at the University of Chicago for his freshman year. Each grade was hard fought. He said he had to make a conscious effort to rank his classes for the time he had to do the work. Some of the core classes could have been an A, but he had to settle for a B and pour the extra time into his computer science and math courses (his double major). Even with that approach, he went many nights with no sleep in marathon work sessions. It sounds like he made very logical choices and is pleased with the results, despite not earning all A’s. I think it has been very good for him not to be one of the top students or earning easy grades.
He goes back to campus a week early as he was selected as one of two Orientation Aids for his House and will shepherd the new freshmen. It is a packed week when only freshmen are allowed on campus. They take placement tests, sit through lots of seminars (including ones on how to navigate public transportation), register for classes, do multiple bond-building trips as a house, and much more. I was just amazed at how strong the relationships became after that week. Served them well all year. Bill loves the school and is excited about helping along the new students.
Matthew (rising 11th) thrived as the only homeschooler out of 78 students for the 4 weeks at the TN Governor’s School for the Humanities and leaves Sunday for Georgetown University’s weeklong program on National Security and Counterintelligence. His nickname at Governor’s School was “Intense Matt” as he loves deep philosophical discussions on any topic. He said he really enjoyed being around intelligent students who could have good discussions. He also was the ping pong champion for the campus.
His sites are still set on West Point in two years.
Stephen (rising 9th) finished his Eagle project this month and just turned in his Eagle rank application. We are waiting on the District to set up the Board of Review. I expect his Court of Honor to be some time this fall. He also earned his black belt in mixed martial arts in June. (Matthew earned his about 2 years ago and helps teach the younger kids’ class.)
Hope you don’t mind a quick update.
Blessings,
Kathy
