Understanding and Using Your PEP Profile for Academics: Home School
(Performance Evaluation Profile)

Thank you for considering the Performance Evaluation Programs (PEP) profile to review and enhance your current academic performance for home schooling. We think you will find it interesting and helpful. The PEP is not a test. There is no perfect score for the different measures of the PEP. One personıs score is not better than another. The PEP is not trying to discover if you have mental health problems or who is the best student. What the PEP does show are certain tendencies you may have which help or hinder your performance in your life as a home school student.

Research indicates that top performers have certain traits and achieve a special mental state before and during the school day. The PEP examines how well you are able to enter that peak performance level. And the PEP offers several suggestions for individual improvement based on the information about yourself that you provided.

The PEP presents three different measures for your consideration. Your results from each measure are presented followed by the individualized suggestions to improve your performance in your studies. First is the Attentional Skills Inventory which gives you feedback on your ability to concentrate in different situations you will face in the learning situations. Here, you will also learn about your ability to focus in different ways such as going from broad to narrow attention quickly.

Second is the Profile of Mood States which determines your mental/emotional temperament for pursuing your studies. Years of research shows that peak performers are consistently in a special emotional state prior to and during work periods. It is an exceptional mind set sometimes called ³in the zone,² which is much different than the average person. This measure will help you understand and attain this high performance mode for your home schoolwork.

Finally is the Learning Styles Report. This measure determines your dominant learning style. Usually, your learning style cannot be changed nor should it be. It just is and is a part of you. The suggestions offered here are to help you and your instructors blend with your particular style and get the most out of learning endeavors.

The PEP, in part, is giving you your current perception of yourself as a student. In that sense, it may or may not be accurate. For example, you may have been up late the night before you took the PEP studying for a test. The PEP may indicate that you are physically tired, when normally you are not.

The PEP is not intended to be the final or definitive analysis of you as a person nor can it be. There are individual differences which no profile can analyze. And some people go against the norm. For example, a few people actually perform better when overly excited, though the majority do not.

Rather, the PEP is intended to be a helpful learning tool which will help improve your home school performance. So if your profile says that you could improve your relaxation skills during the school day and actually you do not need to, the suggestions presented for relaxation are still worthwhile reading for you and may raise your level of performance.
